Love gurus Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor share their dating secrets

Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor

They’re starring together in best-friend romantic comedy Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. And while both Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif have had very public relationships — she with Salman Khan, he with Deepika Padukone — they’ve got some relationship advice that could work for the rest of us as well.

Katrina Kaif
Her on-off relationship with Salman Khan is a constant fodder for gossip and her latest romantic comedy Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani touches on the frustrating nature of love. So who better than Kaif to play the relationship expert? She gives her opinion on love, heartbreak and her favourite romantic film.

The He’s Just Not That Into You scenario:
“I don’t have any make-up or break-up formula. Every relationship is different. But I think every girl out there, who is serious about it, should build up the courage to ask the guy where the relationship is heading. If his answer sounds inadequate, then take the hint and move on. Yes, you may cry a little but then you may even begin hoping for something better to come by. So it’s important to have that ‘where it’s heading’ talk.”

Perfect post break-up movie:
“When Harry Met Sally. I have seen this film many times and I love the concept of having 3am friends/soul mates. In my case, Rocky [Indian designer] and Sandhya — my PA — are the wonderful 24X7 people in my life.”

Favourite romantic matinee idol:
“Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O’ Hara in Gone With The Wind. I love her because she is so obstinate, yet lovable. I also identify with her ‘tomorrow is another day’ strategy.”

Ranbir Kapoor
The good news is that Bollywood’s power couple Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone are still on the right track, but the bad news is Kapoor confesses he is no expert at relationships. The Wake Up Sid star opens up on his “guts don’t lie” strategy and more.

The She’s Just Not That Into You scenario:
“Go with your instincts. The clue lies in the way she looks at you, the way she talks to you and the ways she deals with you. If you feel something is amiss, then go with your guts. It never lies.”

All-time favourite romantic dialogue:
“When Shah Rukh Khan says: ‘Bade bade deshon mein, aisi choti choti baatein hoti rehti hai’ [Senorita, in such big countries such small things are bound to happen] in the film Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge. And, in Casablanca ‘Here’s looking at you, kid’ and ‘Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine’.”

Favourite romantic matinee idol:
“My father [Rishi Kapoor]. When I was a kid and I saw him on screen I thought he was having an affair with them. He was a great actor and had incredible chemistry with his co-stars.”

Perfect relationship formula:
“Firstly, there is nothing called an easy relationship. At times, it is important that you apologise and admit that you have goofed up. If there is one thing I have learnt from my relationships – it’s that it’s never too late to say sorry and it’s best to leave your ego behind. I am a complete goofball in relationships.”

On rumours that your relationship with Padukone is on the rocks:
“We are public figures and such rumours used to affect us earlier. But now we have things under control.”
