Stage Dramas Need Situational Dances – Nargis

November 27, 2009

Stage Actress Nargis

Stage Actress Nargis

The film star and stage dancer Nargis has said the stage dramas need situational dances, which should be backed by romantic poetry instead of display of body parts, Geo news reported.

This she said talking to Geo news after her arrival in stage dramas following over 18 months’ gap.

She applauded the action initiated by government against the sexually explicit materials and activates including films, photography and dances but urged upon the concerned authorities not to take legal action against those film and stage actresses who are not implicated in such evil deeds, sources said.

Dismissing the media reports, she said my sister Deedar and I have never remained involved in sexually explicit dances in stage dramas.

ALI MACGRAW said:
“Lifting the Veil” is a huge and impressive accomplishment – A
Riveting Film! I was fascinated to see the many aspects of Pakistan
which are not normally accessible to us on our television reportage,
and to follow a story which is rich in details of this ancient
culture.”

KASHF-The Lifting of the Veil (banner/poster)

“Kashf” chronicles the story of one man’s search for meaning, parallel
to another man’s search for “success”.  It is so well done and so
beautifully illustrated that it is hard to know how to begin a correct
and/or fair review of this important film. “Kashf” is not only about
the inner journey, the “Sufi” path towards Truth, but it is a poignant
record of a time and an attitude to life that is under severe stress
from fundamentalism and bigotry.  KASHF is poignant, for sure, but it
is sometimes very funny, even absurd.  Then it hits you with a truth
that you can’t avoid, even while you laugh out loud.  I have lived in
India and Pakistan and have met some of the wisest sheikhs, dervishes
and malangs.  I have observed zikr in Multan and Pak Pathan, Lahore
and Karachi and even the Swat valley, so I can attest to the power of
this beautiful film.  “Kashf” has brought light into an area of
awareness and consciousness that so needs it.  Pakistan, a fairly new
country, gets a rap that is not really fair.  Lahore is a magical,
fun, spiritual place where indeed deeply spiritual people reside,
teach and practice…for the health of the planet, the future of
humanity – you should see this film.  It is a very powerful statement
about REAL life and real possibilities and TRANSFORMATION as opposed
to silliness, violence, intolerance and overall stupidity.  See this
film if you do nothing else in 2009!  HUGH ELLIOT Santa Fe, NM

My thanks go to you for the effective and important work that you are
doing on behalf of world peace with Lifting of the Veil. The more I
think about your film the more excited I get about its potential
impact, both on the viewer and as a model for other budding
film-makers.  God willing, Lifting of the Veil will lead to a sequel.

‘OFFICIAL SELECTION’ SANTA FE FILM FESTIVAL 2008
‘BEST EDITING NOMINEE’ SANTA FE FILM FESTIVAL 2008
SYNOPSIS:
KASHF explores one man’s journey onto the Sufi path, the spiritual
dimension of Islam, upon his return to Pakistan after an absence of 25
years.  Armaghan was born out of an oath his mother made to a Sufi Pir
she meets when she was childless. She promises the Pir, who blesses
her, to let her son ‘walk the Sufi path’ when he grows up.  However,
shortly after his birth in Pakistan, Armaghan is sent off to the US to
live with relatives after his father’s death.  After 25 years Armaghan
returns to Pakistan to discover a lost culture, a mystic religion, and
a family secret.  His cousin, Ali, also seeks his own calling in the
nepotistic film world of Lollywood and becomes engulfed by fantastical
musical hallucinations — has he found peace or lost his hold on
reality?

KASHF is a story of universal relevance exploring humanity’s basic questions of who we are, and why we are here.  It is the hero’s journey as Armaghan embarks on his vision quest, meeting along the way messengers, guides and the Master waiting for him to awaken to his calling.

AUDIENCE REACTION/COMMENTS:
I greatly enjoyed the showing of Kashf!  I really appreciated your dramatic
portrayal of the zigzag path Armaghan took.  Congratulations on making
such a fine film.

Ayesha,
I wanted to let you know how much we both enjoyed your film last night.
I loved the way you handled the ordinary and extraordinary, nothing
rejected.  P. Hogan

My thanks go to you for the effective and important work that you are doing on
behalf of world peace with Lifting of the Veil.  The more I think
about your film the more excited
I get about its potential impact, both on the viewer and as a model
for other budding film-makers.
All seekers are life-time seekers and your film brings the protagonist
to the threshold of starting
his journey, his true life.  God willing, Lifting of the Veil  will
lead to a sequel.  T. Trujillo

Ayesha Congrats!!!!
I have told friends, let me know if you need help at any of the
screenings!  I fully support women
in film particularly with honorable projects such as yours…keep up
the good work!
S. Magento

The film was beautiful! I really enjoyed it.
M. Ferguson
Ayesha, Thank you so much for such a beautiful film.  Seeing the film
and witnessing a glimpse
into your envisioning and manifesting of your Divine purpose was
inspirational for me.  The
film left me very self reflective on a myriad of levels such as
culture, history, commitment,
politics, spirituality and the Divine.
F. Phillips

Ayesha
It is extraordinary to me how you were able to communicate in your
film about the process
and problems those who hear the “call” face as they find their way on
the “path”.
It is hard for an individual to explain about those things that just
“are” part of us.
Like: God is or I am a seeker.  These things are equally hard to
depict and you did it so
beautifully, so well.  Thank you, I appreciate your work.  K. Magee

Harassment of Pakistani comedian in India condemned – Pakistani Comedian “Shakeel” Beaten-up by Hindu Extremist Party

January 18, 2009

Pakistani artistes on Thursday (January 15) condemned the harassment of comedian Shakeel Siddiqi (pictured above) during the recording of a comedy show in Mumbai.

“Performing art people are very sensitive and such kind of treatment in India raises many questions and is very unfortunate,” Pakistan’s leading comedian Umer Sharif told IANS.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists on Wednesday (January 14) entered a studio where Siddiqi was shooting for the comedy show “Comedy Circus” and told him to leave for Pakistan.

MNS, led by Raj Thackeray, became notorious last year for violence against people who had come from other parts of India to Maharashtra state, of which Mumbai is the capital.

“I believe he would have gone to India after government’s permission and making his trip public through media,” Sharif said. He said that this incident will certainly force several Pakistani artistes to stay away from the Indian showbiz industry.

Siddiqi went to Mumbai last week to perform in the show.

According to sources in the Pakistani film industry, at present there are at least six Pakistani artistes in India who are working on different projects.

“I know that at least six of the Pakistani people from our industry are in India but I don’t want to name them… none of them have gone there with proper documents like work permit etc and are on visit visas,” said a senior producer in the Pakistani film industry, requesting anonymity.

He said that it was responsibility of the host to provide security to the Pakistanis working there. He also criticised the role of Indian High Commission in Islamabad, which he said was “providing them visit visas instead of work visa”.

Human rights activist Sohaila Rashid said that the Indian government is responsible for the incident. “This is strange that a Pakistani artiste was beaten up in Mumbai. This shows how responsible is the Indian government,” said Rashid, adding it can add to the current tension between the two countries.

Sources in the Foreign Office said that they have asked the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi to immediately contact Siddiqi and repatriate him to Pakistan.

The sources said that the government plans to issue an advisory to Pakistanis who are present in India or planning to travel there on security issues.

“It seems a horrible news and affects the relationship between the film industries of both the countries,” said senior film producer Sangeeta. She said that Shakeel was well-known in India and was a source of bringing joy to millions of faces all across the sub-continent.

She said: “I am afraid that this can create further problems.”

Hotstepper of the week: Sanam Agha

December 16, 2008

Hotstepper of the week: Sanam Agha

Hotstepper of the week: Sanam Agha

She’s young, she’s beautiful and with her very first collection launched under her newly established fashion label ‘Sanam’, she has proved that she is talented too. Sanam Agha isn’t a new kid on the block – she’s been part of the fashion and media blitz by juggling various roles. She has acted in various high-profile TV dramas and she has hosted music programmes on Aag TV. Sanam has also had a stint at event management at Frieha Altaf’s Catwalk and she has even modeled in many of the shows she has organized; the Madonna improvisation she did at the Sunsilk show and the dramatic robot-role she undertook at the Castrol show being two of the most memorable.

Over the past four years, this girl has constantly been adding feathers to her cap and finally she has decided to settle down with the one vocation she trained for at London Fashion School: fashion designing.

Sanam launched her very first collection – an amalgamation of womenswear, menswear, saris, formal chiffon ensembles, party dresses and even jackets and trendy coats for women. And considering the stronghold this girl has on fashion as well as the innate love she has for drama, one can’t wait to see her bring it all together at her very first fashion show scheduled to be held early next year. Here’s a very warm welcome o fashion’s new promising designer!

Lahore High Court Bans Dances in Stage Dramas

November 29, 2008

THE Lahore High Court on Tuesday imposed a ban on dances in stage dramas and their exhibition on television by cable networks in the province.

Dismissing an application filed by a local stage drama producer, Justice Khurshid Anwar Bhinder on Tuesday issued a short order declaring the dance performance as un-Islamic.

The judge held that violation of the order would amount to contempt of the court and the district coordination officers (DCOs) and district police officers (DPOs) would be responsible for such violation.

The petitioner had challenged a notification issued by the Home Department wherein a parameter was explained for stage dramas. The government had directed the drama producers to follow the scripts strictly, which they have to get approved by respective Art Council prior to exhibition. The government also banned dances in stage dramas. The applicant was of the view that a dance was a vital part of any stage drama and public demand as well.

He also pointed out that the government allowed dance performances at Al Hamra but discriminately did not allowed the same in stage dramas.

A law officer, Sarfraz Ali Khan, opposing the application argued that by performing dances on stage, the actresses indulged in immoral activities and the government rightly imposed the ban on such activities. The detailed judgment is likely to be issued on Wednesday.
